December 04 CFCS Meeting.
Mr. Abner WeintraubDigital Viedo “A Very Private Eye Inc.”

December’s meeting was full of interesting information concerning how we will be “watched” in future years. Mr. Abner Weintraub represented “A Very Private Eye Inc.” and made some very clear points concerning surveillance and digital video uses in the future.

One of the more interesting facts was that even today as you go about your daily business of shopping or buying groceries, you may be video taped from dozens to hundreds of times and that number is increasing rapidly.

Mr. Abner WeintraubHe pointed out that the old analog video which has served well in the past is being replaced at a rapid rate by digital video. He explained that among the many advantages of storing video in digital format was the easy and absolutely correct duplication along with the lack of wear of the media (VHS tape vs. hard drives) and remote access and control. Literally a person that owns a business can sit in a remote office maybe hundreds of miles away and watch live security cams over the internet. At the present time it was estimated that 30% to 40% of all video used in surveillance is already digital and more is changing from analog to digital every day.

Mr. Weintraub also pointed out the privacy issues of video surveillance and the many laws involved in protecting citizens and workers. While there are laws and moral issues involved, the need for recording live data and operations is becoming more necessary for businesses as well as safety concerns. Also as a part of the overall presentation Mr. Weintraub illustrated many different types of systems used to manage and store digital video and compared and contrasted those methods to the ones used for analog video.

It was a very informative and interesting talk and the many slides and illustrations made the details very clear and easy to understand.
