December CFCS Meeting.

Phil DuMas - Octurnis Network Defense Services Phil DuMas - Octurnis Network Defense Services

This month’s program was by the “white hat hackers” as Phil DuMas from Octurnis Network Defense Services called his people. Their function is to tell you how secure your network is and to help you defend it from intrusion.

Phil filled his time with tales of terror and doom insofar as most of our networks are concerned. He even pointed out that in many cases networks can be penetrated in less than a minute

According to Phil, the most hacked program on earth is our old friend Windows XP and that running Linux is even more dangerous. From the user standpoint there weren’t many happy things to hear.

This month's program was by the I believe we all came away thinking of ways to make our networks safer. In his highly interesting and informative talk, he did point out some excellent ways to help you be less vulnerable to intrusion by use of routers and firewalls along with the security applications within the wireless networks.

During the program he passed around an antenna that is used to drive around in a car and locate wireless networks and to be employed to penetrate and use those networks.
Those of us that stay connected to the net are in constant danger of having our computer network used in ways that we would never approve of and as Phil pointed out a number of times, it is YOUR I.P. that is the one being used!

The program was excellent and highly informative. Our sincerest thanks to Phil and to Octurnis for their time.
